Safety Tips

Safe Operation

Always ventilate after fueling. Open hatches, run blower for at least four minutes, and carefully check for gasoline fumes in the fuel and engine areas before starting your engine.

Wear a Personal Floatation Device.  If you always wear a "life vest" when you're on the boat, then you will be prepared for the unexpected.  Choose an approved PFD that is appropriate for your needs.

Use Properly Sized Line with Cleats.  Cleats are measured in inches of length.  The diameter of a line used with a cleat is determined by multiplying 1/16" x Length of Cleat.  Example for a Six Inch Cleat:  D=1/16" x 6", D=3/8".  Use a line with 3/8" diameter.

Boat Towing

What could have gone wrong here? Speed? Weight?

You Can Avoid Accidents.  Always control your speed when towing and use hitches and equipment that is suited for your vehicle.

Safety is Paramount

Have PFDs Ready for Use.  You must carry one wearable USCG-approved serviceable PFD of the proper size and type for each boat occupant. No tears, rips, broken straps or snaps. Use the squeeze test on kapok PFDs to check for punctures in the inner plastic liner. All PFDs must be ready at hand and not enclosed in plastic bags or locked compartments.

Avoid Alcohol.  The probability of being killed in a boating accident doubles when alcohol is involved. Operating a boat under the influence is just as dangerous as driving a car after you’ve been drinking.

Always Have a Lookout.  Remember that you should always have a lookout to keep watch for other boats and hazards in the water.  Lookouts should be alert and ready.  Floating debris, rocks and other boats pose a hazard to even the most experienced boater.
